Giving Tuesday Feature: Community Action Agency of Somerville (CAAS)

Nov 14 10:24 pm

For 34 years Community Action Agency of Somerville (CAAS) has helped reduce poverty among local families and individuals while also working to change the societal conditions that cause and perpetuate poverty. They assist families and individuals in escaping poverty and becoming economically self-sufficient. They also serve as an an "emergency room" for every non-medical need an individual or family may have: housing, food, heat, education. CAAS is also a switchboard for referrals to other agencies that can help people and the center of coalitions that make a stronger Somerville.

In addition to serving individuals and families, CAAS runs the Head Start program in Somerville and Cambridge. Your GivingTuesday gift supports CAAS.

Giving Tuesday Feature: The Welcome Project

Nov 05 10:03 pm

The Welcome Project builds the collective power of Somerville immigrants to participate in and shape community decisions. They provide programs for immigrant youth, adults and families that hone leadership and personal development, provide access to employment and education, help residents to learn English and the nuances of a new culture and engage more fully in the civic life of the city.

How can a donation to #GivingTuesdaySomerville help? $50 will cover a scholarship for an adult student to study ESOL for 1 14-week  semester. $100 will cover a scholarship for an adult student to study ESOL for a full academic year (28 weeks), and $250 would provide 40 hours of professional medical interpreter training for 1 bilingual high school student.

Please support the Welcome Project today with a Giving Tuesday donation!

So what is GivingTuesday?

Oct 02 12:05 pm

Giving-Tues-Banner

GivingTuesday is the first Tuesday in December (this year that’s December 1!), and it is an annual global day of giving that helps to raise funds and awareness for important causes everywhere. In Somerville, 14 nonprofit organizations are joining forces to collaborate on a second-annual joint fundraising effort as part of the international GivingTuesday program.

GivingTuesday is more than just a single-day event. Leading up to December 1, each partner organization will be featured for a week by all collaborators.

Our goal is to raise $50,000 for the participating nonprofit community of Somerville. Funds are shared equally among participants. Help us get there!

Checks can be made out to Groundwork Somerville at 24 Park Street # 7, Somerville, MA 02143. Please put GivingTuesday Somerville in the memo line. Online giving coming soon. #giveLocal

The effort culminates in a big fabulous celebration on GivingTuesday, and anyone who contributes to the fundraising effort is invited! This year’s event will take place at the Arts at the Armory on December 1st. Save the date!

When you give to GivingTuesday, you’ll be supporting these 14 amazing local organizations:
