Now that fall is here, everybody gets a little busier, and the temperatures start to drop. And with all the delicious produce coming into season (hello, pumpkins, cranberries, and squashes!), maybe you’re starting to slip in your workout routine.
Never fear! The Somerville Homeless Coalition is here to kick your butt into gear at their 16th Annual 5K Road Race! C’mon, if you can’t run/walk/skip/Soulja Boy your way to a finish line for charity, you’ll just have to create some kind of charity sit-in at the intersection of Davis Square, and that is just dangerous and will make all the commuters angry. You antagonist, you.
You can enter the race for a mere $25, but raise $100+ in pledge money, and you can race for free! There’s also a free SHC hat in it for anyone who raises more than $250! Work best with others? Rally some friends and raise as a team - the team with the most money will win a prize.
All this fundraising talk making you feel competitive? Well, this is a race after all, and if you plan to participate as a runner, there are many awards and prizes to be won by top placers overall and in each category. Maybe you’ll even break an all-time Road Race record - those Somerville Road Runners have held the team record since 2008.
Although it’s too late submit your company logo for race sponsorship, there’s always time to donate! If you have your heart set on sponsoring, you can always search the Fundraisers page to contribute to an individual runner. Maybe you can convince a friend to race in your company mascot’s costume!
Check-in and registration will be open on race day from 7:30-8:30am, but online registration will save you a lot of time and will stay open through tomorrow, 9/29 until 9pm, which is also the deadline for wheelchair participants. The earlier you register, the better, as the first 500 registrants get a free t-shirt! Extras may be available for $10 on race day. Pre-reg also lets you do early t-shirt and number pick-up Davis Square today 2-5pm, 9/29 from 2-7pm, and 9/30 2-5pm.
The Race begins in Davis Square on October 1 at 9am sharp! Then join Davis restaurants Johnny D’s, The Burren, Anna’s Taqueria, Orleans, and Redbones for a post-race brunch.
